Verizon and DIRECTV: Review of TV – Internet – Phone Bundles

Let us clarify a few things before proceeding with this review of TV, Internet, and phone bundles offered by Verizon and DIRECTV. Partnerships with external providers allow DIRECTV to provide customers with cable, Internet and phone packages referred to as service bundles. By combining, or bundling, commonly requested services, customers enjoy discounted monthly rates. According to Consumer Reports, readers have a positive overall experience with service bundling.

Bundle Specifics

DIRECTV and Verizon offer standard (non-digital) bundles called Triple Play packages. Over 205 cable channels, including National Geographic and Nicktoons, are available through DIRECTV’s satellite-based programming. Internet signals travel via Verizon digital subscriber lines or DSL. Signals reach user homes through local telephone lines.

Internet download speeds average between .5 and 1 Megabits per second (Mbps). Packages come with one of two phone services: Regional or Freedom Essentials. Freedom Essentials offers extremely limited long distance calling while the feature is non-existent for Regional Essential customers.

Bundle customers receive three free months of movie channels like HBO and Cinemax. All bundles include the National Football League (NFL) Sunday Ticket so sports fanatics can follow their favorite teams every game day. Triple Play pricing, as of October 2012, ranges from $64.99 USD for a starter bundle with Regional Essential phone service, to $74.99 USD per month for bundles with Freedom Essentials telephone service or enhanced Internet speeds between 1 and 15 Mbps. Customers must enter a two-year service contract.

The Best Option

According to the New York Times, the “right” bundle comes down to finances and personal needs. Bundles should be cheaper than combined monthly phone, cable and Internet bills. Heavy Internet users should look for plans with fast download speeds.

Customers should ask about hidden fees and equipment leasing costs before entering any agreements. Cancellation procedures and financial penalties are equally important. Sometimes communicating with current cable providers can result in unadvertised savings. $74.99 per month for TV and telephone with enhanced Internet feels like a good deal to me, considering I can always use my cellular for long distance calls.
